I forgot to mention
the mark on his hand,
in between his index
finger and thumb.
This is something I
wondered about, until
I started playing back
on the stick and hard.
I noticed it also on
Narada's hand. It's a
burn that eventually
scars over, almost
permanently.
It actually goes away
after it gets a chance
to heal but Steve al-
ways had the mark.

My friend was a drummer and I used to go and learn how to play drums after school with him. Well, he was out of school that day and the music director asked me to sub for him. I said, <font size="4">OK !</font>
To make a long story short, I was playing at solo ensemble 2 weeks later.
Anyways, we played a Chuck Mangione tune and I thought that was jazz so I bought some of his records. James Bradley jr. instantly was my fav. drummer at that point.
Well, Mangione was playing at the Minnesota State Fair so the other jazz band drummer and I went. We snuck underground and through all of these tunnels to get near the stage. We insidiously found ourselves onstage, and I was pissed off because they weren't James Bradley's drums. They were these little black drums with floor toms on stands. At that point the security officer caught us and escorted us off the stage and back through the tunnels to the stands.
When I saw the drummer, he had a Green Yamaha jersey on and a big Afro and beard. " Wait a minute he's playing his left hand on the high-hat."
"Oh, Now <font size="4">He's playing with 4 sticks! Holy Sh**!"</font>
That's when I found out about Gadd.
At that point I went out and bought every record I could including Mangione's Tarentella record.
I have to say he's one of the reasons I have had such a great life.
-
Peter, did you pull this off the Gaddaporium? I was wondering if you have the recording of the 11th Commandment. from the C.Mangione Tarantella record? I don't think it's out on Cd. That piece was written for Steve's College recital. He's reading it live during the recording and it's some sick playing. It's basically a drum solo throughout if I recall. It's a long tune. If you have that one Bring It On. : )
I never heard King tut before. Who's the sax player?
-
Mark Colby is the sax player
and headliner. He was the first
saxophone for Maynard, remember?
He was on "Primal Scream", with
Chick on the killer "The Cheshire
Cat Walk".
Yes, I have the "11th Commandment".
It was rehearsed that day, before
the performance in Rochester.
Let me see if I can get a hold of
Santa for some goodies....

I didn't know that was for Gadd!?!? I played that back in 1982, but I could never get the 16th note kick parts and the end of the fill. James Bradley Jr. did a very nice job on the live record. What ever happened to him? I always liked his playing.

That was written for his Recital.
Don't know what became of JB.

JBJ was playing with Mary's Danish for awhile in the early nineties. He then played with a friend of mine..did the album on Mercury records and split. He struggled with some personal issues after that and the next thing was that band called Crazy Town? I think that was their name...they had the single "You're my Butterfly" or some shit like that...I don't know what he's doing now,but that accounts for the last decade.
-
I just realized it wasn't the 11th Commandment, but Children Of Sanchez that I played, hence the 16th note kick drum part I was talking about!

He has chops and did great on that tune.

This is from a long out of print release
called "Serpentine Fire" by Mark Colby on
CBS, produced by Bob James, with an all-
star band including Bob on keyboards and
Gary King on bass.

It's always been an inspiration for me.

I tested it and it works.
Again, it's over 14M, so be patient.
You will be rewarded.

Oh Peter. Just what the dr. ordered.
This performance is is the reason I'm writing this at 3 a.m in the morning. This is why I love my life. Gadd changed my life and I hope this cut does the same to someone else. Give it up to Gadd!
Thanks soooooooo much! Without Gadd there would be no Vinnie or Weckl. I guarantee it! Remember Gadd was pretty much reading this after the afternoon rehearsal. Actually, there would be no Gadd if it were not for Tony, Elvin and James Gadson and Purdie too! It's a little hokey at times but the 6/8 playing by Gadd is FAT ! The phrasing is very modern.
What year is this? I hope you guys dig this.
-
By the way. I think that's Dizzy Gillespie laughing in the background when Gadd starts playing that left hand biz towards the end. Gillespie is in awe. He's heard it all but he's floored by this drummer.
-
I think you're right, Blake!
Steve has these signature triplets
and double-strokes that he does
between his kick and snare that
always floored everyone. They're
just incomparable.
What a drummer and what a life! I
am sure he is thanking his lucky
stars for still being alive today.
I'm glad for him.

That was simply the best story.
Thanx Peter......beats
